An Ordinary Man

A child in the street, all he needs is a guiding hand
to keep him safe and warm, to stop him playing with a gun
The man that he meets, doesn't know what to do
so he just sits there and listens to everything he can

He's an ordinary man
Why should he find himself doing these things
No ordinary man should be asked to do
He's an ordinary man
just trying to do these things no one else can
He's an ordinary man

He's far from home, he doesn't know how he's going to
make it through the day, to see the people he left behind
The girl on the corner, she's frozen in fear, she sees him
coming down the street, he's carrying a gun

He's an ordinary man
Why should he find himself doing these things
No ordinary man should be asked to do
He's an ordinary man
He's just trying to do these things no one else can
He's an ordinary man

The rain's falling down, they lower the man to the ground
they carried him home to see the people he left behind
It's still coming down, but I can still feel the tears
that are running down my face now that I realise

He's an ordinary man
Why should he find himself doing these things
No ordinary man should be asked to do
He's an ordinary man
He's just trying to do these things no one else can
He's an ordinary man

I'm an ordinary man
Why should I find himself doing these things
No ordinary man should be asked to do
I'm an ordinary man
I'm just trying to do these things no one else can

Alba na Bra!The Lyrics
This song is a very personal one to me.  When I received the music from Pete I had not long heard that someone I knew had been killed on active service in Afghanistan and I was already thinking along the lines of a softer track regarding that subject.

I tried to avoid the trap of writing a 'tribute' song and endeavoured instead to write something of perceptions and feelings from both sides... and the questions going through all our heads when we hear of another soldier dying.  I hope I've achieved that.

In memory of WO2 Dan Shirley and all those who have fallen while serving their country.
